About this work

Antenna is a photograph portraying a scene in nature. The artist believes that anything in nature can be seen as animist, and therefore any object, creature or place has a spirit of its own. The dream catcher was originally conceived as a sculpture, interpreting the popular crafts items in a contemporary context. The sculpture is made from Althea flower shrubs, and represents gentle persistence and tenacity. The ceramic debris is used as a semiotic element, whilst the natural light and the time passing enhance its subtle effect. The photograph is a documentary record of this work serving as an extension of the artwork.

About Yixin Zhang

Yixin Zhang graduated from the Royal College of Art in Sculpture in 2020, and continues her research and practice in the Moving Image area. Zhang has an architecture background so her sight automatically focuses on certain structures and landscapes which can be observed within her work. The artist is attracted by themes connected to humanity, rituals, myths and the study of re-enchantment. Her practice includes sculptures, documentaries, artist films and photography.

When observing the fragments within an object or image, one relies on one sided information and cannot restore its original truth and complete panoramic. When the body is within an unconstrained state, we communicate with our souls and a higher self. These works aim to catch these symbolic meanings, between the subconscious adventure and the restoration of reality, finding a calming balance and serenity.
