About this Work

In the T-Shirt Avatars series, created during the 2020 lockdown, Burki lifts and transforms portraits of figures from social networks through the medium of acrylic. The blurred layers of the canvas mimic and paradoxically counter the glitches of virtuality. These portraits capture the domestic sublime, dissolving into a warm abstraction that re-inserts vitality into the images by reversing the process by which they became virtual, while still retaining a sentiment of isolation.

About Teo Burki

Teo Burki gained her BA from Tbilisi Academy of Arts, before continuing her studies at LUCA School of Arts. In 2020, she completed her MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins. Burki’s practice centres on contemporary painting, mixing abstract expressionist and figurative modes within the conceptual framework of investigating random, everyday pop-up images. The multimedia artist works across painting, drawing and moving image, and is also a practising curator, employing interdisciplinary thinking to various international projects and exhibitions, across predominantly Georgia, Belgium and the UK.

Through her practice, Burki investigates various gestures, employing both abstract expressionist and figurative modes to create movement and fluidity in her imagery. Often, she pulls from images she has experienced online, building these into paintings that interrogate virtuality in a manual domain. She describes this territory as “the in-between”, and reinforces this perception through the painterly techniques she engages, building a floating, ephemeral language of her own.
