About this Work

The artist chooses never to reveal the narrative histories of her photographic series. For her, the work develops through the physical act of revisiting, and this is where she draws her meaning. She distributes time through the photographic medium, inviting the viewer to consider how temporality manifests in the image.

About Jasmine Kingsley-Cole

Jasmine Kingsley-Cole is a photographer based in London. She gained her BA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, and is currently undertaking an MA in Art Business at Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Her practice is rooted in reflection, and she views the camera as a tool to revisit places she has once been. Her work is always open, and she returns to it constantly as a moment to interrogate the uncanny and the transference and impermanence of past and present.

Kingsley-Cole shoots on a 35mm 1977 Canon AV-1, a camera that was given to her by a family friend. With this sentimental object, she journeys to the past, to places she has visited before. Her practice is deeply concerned with re-enactment as a way to relive history as a personal event. There is an underlying sense of the uncanny in these works, found in the strangeness of seeing once again a space that has embedded itself in memory, and the artist seeks to interrogate how this effect can influence the work an artist makes.
